Create an Ambigram Online in a Few Steps

Enter One Word or Two Words

In Single word mode the word is paired with itself, so the design aims to read the same word when turned upside down. In Two words mode you choose a second word to appear after rotation. Both words must have the same number of letters, because the first letter of one word shares a space with the last letter of the other. Use the letters A–Z, up to 12 per word.

Choose a Style and Customize Your Design

Pick Modern, Minimal, Bold or Geometric, then fine-tune line weight, letter spacing, letter colour and background. A transparent background is available for PNG and SVG. Styles change the look of the lines; they don’t make a hard word pair easier to read.

Rotate the Preview to Check Both Readings

Press Rotate 180° to turn the actual design over. It’s the same artwork in both orientations, not two pieces of text being swapped, so what you see rotated is exactly what someone will see if they turn your design upside down.

Download Your Ambigram

Download a PNG for sharing, an SVG for scalable artwork, or a JPG for a simple image with a solid background. Each file matches the preview and your chosen settings.

What Is an Ambigram?

An ambigram is lettering designed to be read in more than one way: after rotating it, reflecting it, or viewing it from another direction. It’s not the same as upside-down text. Flip an ordinary word and you get unreadable upside-down letters; in an ambigram, the shapes are built so the turned-over version still forms real letters.

The example above is a real design from this generator. The word “swims” works well because its letters pair up neatly: s turns into s, w turns into m, and i into i.

Types of Ambigrams You Can Explore

Rotational Ambigrams

Designs that read correctly after a 180° turn, like a playing card. This is the type this ambigram generator creates.

Mirror Ambigrams

Designs that read correctly in a reflection rather than after a turn. Choose Lake Reflection in the font list, then press Reflect to see the mirrored reading. Each letter of a reflection font is drawn to stay readable when flipped top to bottom, like a word reflected in a lake.

Two-Word Ambigrams

One design that reveals a different word when rotated, such as a pair of names or opposite ideas. They’re popular and challenging, because every letter has to work as two different letters.

Single-Word Ambigrams

A word that reads the same both ways up. The letters pair from the outside in: the first with the last, the second with the second-to-last, and so on. A middle letter has to look like itself upside down.

How This Ambigram Generator Works

Good ambigram lettering is designed letter pair by letter pair. A rotational ambigram font contains a separate, hand-drawn tile for every combination of “this letter upright” and “that letter upside down”: 676 tiles for the alphabet. The generator places the right tile for each position, so the artwork reads one word upright and the other word rotated. A reflection font works the same way, with one tile per letter drawn to read the same in a mirror.

Alongside any designed fonts, the tool includes SimpleTools Mono, a simple alphabet drawn in code. Some letters in it are exact rotations of each other:

Letter pairs that match exactly in SimpleTools Mono
UprightRotated 180°Match
bqExact
dpExact
nuExact
mwExact
hyExact
s, o, x, zThemselvesExact

For other pairs it overlays both letters, which is why it rates each pair as strong, fair or experimental. It works well for words like “swims”, and is clearly a draft for words like “love / hate”. Choose a designed font when you want a finished look.

How to Make an Ambigram Online

  1. Choose Single word or Two words.
  2. Type your word, and the word after rotation if you chose two words.
  3. Press Generate Ambigram.
  4. Check the match rating and the letter-by-letter results under the preview.
  5. Press Rotate 180° to check the second reading.
  6. Adjust the style, line weight, spacing and colours.
  7. Choose a size and press Download PNG, SVG or JPG.

How to Choose Words for an Ambigram

  • Look for rotation-friendly letters. s, o, x and z look like themselves upside down; d/p, b/q, n/u and m/w swap.
  • Start short. Every extra letter is another pair that has to work.
  • Match lengths for two words. Pairs with the same number of letters are required here, and easier to design in general.
  • Mind the middle. In odd-length single words, the middle letter must look like itself rotated.
  • Expect some pairs to resist. Letters like f, k, r, t and v have no natural partner here. Popular pairs such as LOVE / HATE are hard in any simple alphabet, and hand-drawn ambigrams often need custom letter shapes to make them work.

Ambigram Ideas for Tattoos, Names, and Logos

Name Ambigrams

Pairing two names of equal length, such as partners or family members, is a classic idea. Try several spellings or nicknames; changing one letter can turn an experimental result into a strong one.

Ambigram Tattoo Ideas

A downloaded design makes a useful concept reference to bring to an artist. Before anything permanent, have a professional lettering or tattoo artist refine it, and check both readings at the real size, since thin lines and tight spacing can blur on skin.

Ambigrams for Logos and Creative Projects

The generator is good for early exploration of a brand name, event title or poster idea. Export an SVG to keep working in design software. It can’t confirm a design is unique or available as a trademark, so check before relying on it for a brand.

Download Your Ambigram in the Right Format

PNG for Sharing and Digital Use

A sharp raster image up to 4,000 pixels wide, with an optional transparent background, making it a good fit for social posts, documents and placing over other images.

SVG for Scalable Artwork

Genuine vector paths, not an embedded picture, so it stays crisp at any size and opens in vector editors such as Illustrator or Inkscape. The lines are stroked paths, so you can still change their thickness in an editor.

JPG for Simple Image Sharing

A widely compatible image with a solid background (JPG can’t be transparent). Use it where file size and compatibility matter more than transparency.

Tips for Getting Better Ambigram Results

  • Start with shorter words, then build up.
  • Read the letter-by-letter ratings to find the weak pair, and try swapping just that letter.
  • Try each style: bolder lines can hide small mismatches; thinner lines make overlaps easier to separate.
  • Increase letter spacing if neighbouring letters run together.
  • Rotate the preview, and check the design at the size you’ll actually use it.
  • Treat experimental results as drafts to refine, not finished artwork.

Frequently Asked Questions About Ambigram Generators

What is an ambigram generator?

A tool that turns a word, or a pair of words, into lettering designed to be read in more than one orientation. This one creates rotational ambigrams: the same design reads one way upright and another way (or the same way) when turned 180°.

Is this ambigram generator free?

Yes. You can generate, customise and download designs without an account or payment.

How do I make an ambigram online?

Choose single-word or two-word mode, type your word(s), press Generate Ambigram, then use Rotate 180° to check both readings. Adjust the style and colours, and download when you’re happy.

Can I create an ambigram from two words?

Yes. Choose Two words and enter a first word and the word you want to see after rotation. They need the same number of letters, because each letter position is paired with a letter of the other word.

Can I download my ambigram?

Yes. After generating, download it as PNG, SVG or JPG. PNG and JPG can be 1,200, 2,400 or 4,000 pixels wide; SVG is vector artwork that scales to any size.

Which file formats are supported?

PNG (with an optional transparent background), SVG (vector paths, with an optional transparent background) and JPG (always with a solid background). You can also copy the SVG code.

Why does my word not generate a clear ambigram?

Only some letters turn into other letters when rotated. Where two paired letters don’t share shapes in this alphabet, the design overlays both, which can be hard to read. The tool rates each letter pair so you can see which parts work. Try shorter words, words with letters like s, o, x, z, n/u, d/p, b/q or m/w, or a different word pair.

Can I use an ambigram for a tattoo?

You can use a design from this tool as a starting point or reference. For something permanent, ask a professional lettering or tattoo artist to review and refine it, and check both readings at the size it will actually be.

Does an ambigram read the same when rotated 180 degrees?

A single-word rotational ambigram reads the same word both ways. A two-word ambigram reads a different word after rotation. Mirror ambigrams use reflection instead of rotation.

Is an ambigram the same as upside-down text?

No. Upside-down text just flips ordinary letters, which usually becomes unreadable. An ambigram’s letter shapes are designed so the rotated version still forms readable letters.

Can I use the generated design commercially?

It depends on the font. Designs made with the built-in SimpleTools Mono alphabet use letter shapes drawn by SimpleTools24, and we don’t claim ownership of them. Designed fonts carry their own licence, shown under the preview and in the Fonts and credits section; for example, a Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike font requires crediting its designer. We can’t confirm a design is unique or free of trademarks, so check before using it as a logo.
