Dumb Charades is a silent guessing game: one player acts out a word, phrase, movie, object or action without speaking, and their team tries to guess it before time runs out. The hardest part is usually coming up with fair prompts on the spot. This dumb charades word generator does that for you, drawing random dumb charades words from a library of 4,000 prompts so the game can start straight away.

How to Use the Dumb Charades Word Generator

  1. Choose a category, or leave it on Random for a mix of everything.
  2. Pick a difficulty: Easy, Medium, Hard or Random.
  3. Press Generate word. Use Hide if the screen might be seen.
  4. Give the phone to the actor and press Start round on the timer if you’re timing turns.
  5. When the word is guessed, or time’s up, press Generate next for the next player.

No repeats is switched on by default, so a word won’t come back until you’ve worked through every word that matches your settings. Choose 3, 5 or 10 words per turn if you want a short list to play from.

Dumb Charades Categories

Each category plays differently. Mixing them keeps a long game from getting predictable.

Movie Charades

Film titles are the classic dumb charades prompt, and the hardest to act because titles are often abstract. Players usually signal “movie” first, then the number of words, then act out the easiest word or a famous scene. For a game of only films, use the dumb charades movie generator.

Action Charades

Everyday activities such as brushing teeth, cooking, swimming or driving are naturally visual, which makes them ideal warm-up rounds and good for mixed-age groups.

Object Charades

Objects are acted by showing their shape or how you use them: open an invisible umbrella, climb a ladder, snip with scissors. The trick is to show the use, not just the outline.

Kids Charades

Simple, familiar prompts that children can recognise and act confidently. See our dumb charades ideas for kids, which keeps the draw to child-friendly categories.

Animal Charades

Animals are among the easiest prompts to act: a trunk, a hop, a waddle. Behaviour prompts like “a peacock dancing” are a step harder and great for older players.

Funny Charades for Adults

Relatable grown-up situations, such as losing the TV remote or pretending to listen, make for big laughs at house parties and game nights. They’re cheeky rather than explicit, but you know your group, so check the words suit the room.

Office-Friendly Charades

Work-themed prompts like printer jams and video calls that most colleagues will recognise. The office dumb charades page keeps the draw to workplace-appropriate categories.

Easy Dumb Charades Words

Easy words are short, concrete and instantly recognisable, such as single animals, objects and actions. Use them for warm-ups, younger players or anyone new to the game.

Hard Dumb Charades Words

Hard words are longer phrases, abstract ideas and less obvious titles that need splitting into parts. Save them for experienced players or a final round.

Difficulty is a practical game rating, not a precise measurement: what’s hard for one group can be easy for another. Where the library doesn’t specify a difficulty, the generator estimates it from the length of the prompt.

How to Play Dumb Charades

  1. Split into two teams and decide the order of actors.
  2. The first actor generates a word privately, using Hide if needed.
  3. Start the timer. The actor signals the type of prompt (movie, book, song, phrase) and the number of words.
  4. The actor mimes the word without speaking while their team calls out guesses.
  5. If the team guesses before time runs out, they score a point.
  6. Pass the phone to the other team’s actor and generate the next word.

Dumb Charades Rules

Every group has its own house rules. These are the most common:

  • No speaking or sounds. No mouthing words, humming tunes or sound effects.
  • No writing and no spelling letters in the air.
  • No pointing at the real thing. If the word is “chair”, you can’t point to a chair in the room.
  • Agreed gestures only for categories and word counts (see the table below).
  • A fixed time limit, usually 60 to 90 seconds.

Agree on any variations, such as allowing finger-spelling or passing on a word, before you start.

Commonly used dumb charades gestures
SignalCommon gesture
MovieCrank an old-fashioned film camera beside your head
BookHold your palms together, then open them like a book
SongPretend to sing into a microphone
TV showDraw a rectangle in the air
Number of wordsHold up that many fingers
Which word you’re actingHold up fingers again for its position
Number of syllablesLay fingers on your forearm
Sounds likeCup a hand behind your ear
Small word (a, the, of)Hold thumb and finger close together
Correct guessPoint at your nose and at the guesser

These are widely used conventions, not official rules. Use whatever your group agrees on.

Dumb Charades Movie Ideas

Movie rounds work best with a mix of one-word titles, which are quick to act, and multi-word titles that reward splitting into parts. Animated films are usually easiest because their characters are so physical, while dramas with abstract titles are the toughest. To make movie rounds harder, ban the “sounds like” signal or require the actor to perform a scene rather than individual words. For a full movie round, use the movie charades generator, which draws only film titles.

Dumb Charades Ideas for Kids

With children, keep turns short (30 to 45 seconds), stick to animals, objects and actions, and let younger players make sounds if it keeps everyone involved. Cartoon-style prompts like a superhero landing or a snowman melting are big favourites. Our kids’ dumb charades generator starts on easy words and never draws from the adult categories.

Dumb Charades for Adults

For adult game nights, raise the challenge: hard difficulty, long movie titles, and the Funny Adults category for relatable situations. Teams of three to five keep everyone involved, and a points table across several rounds adds a competitive edge. For a big group, generate 5 or 10 words per turn and let each actor race through as many as they can before the timer ends.

Dumb Charades for Office and Team Building

Charades fits neatly into a 10 to 15 minute Fun Friday slot, an icebreaker for new starters, or a break during a long workshop. Over video calls it works with one person sharing their camera while others guess in chat. Many teams find it a relaxed way to get people talking, though it works best when participation is optional. The office dumb charades generator sticks to work-friendly categories.

Tips for Acting Out Difficult Words

  • Signal the shape first: category, then number of words, then which word you’re starting with.
  • Start with the easiest word in a phrase, not necessarily the first one.
  • Break long words into syllables or use “sounds like” with a simpler rhyming word.
  • Act the main idea before the details. For a film, a famous scene can beat word-by-word acting.
  • Exaggerate. Big movements read better than small ones, especially on video calls.
  • Watch your face. It’s easy to accidentally mouth a word or laugh out a hint.

Stuck on a prompt? Generate another random word and come back to it later.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a dumb charades word generator?

A tool that picks a random word or phrase for you to act out, so nobody has to prepare a list or secretly choose prompts. Choose a category and difficulty, press Generate, and hand the phone to the actor.

Will the same word come up twice?

Not while No repeats is on, which it is by default. Words you’ve had stay out of the draw until every matching word has been used. Then you can reset and start again. The list of used words lives only in the open page.

Can I generate several words at once?

Yes. Choose 3, 5 or 10 words per turn, or type any number up to 50. The first word is shown large on the card and the full list appears underneath with a Copy all button, which is handy for planning rounds or sharing in a chat.

How do I keep the word secret from the guessers?

Press Hide (or the H key) before passing the phone around. The card shows that a word is ready without displaying it, and Reveal brings it back.

How long should each turn be?

Sixty seconds suits most groups. Use 90 seconds for movie titles or hard words and 30 seconds for quick-fire rounds. You can also set a custom time from 5 seconds to 10 minutes.

Is there a version for kids?

Yes. The dumb charades for kids page uses only child-friendly categories such as kids, animals, objects and actions, and starts on easy words.

Can I play dumb charades over a video call?

Yes. The actor generates a word privately, then acts on camera while others guess. Copy the word into a private message if someone else is choosing for the actor.

Does the generator need an internet connection?

Only to load the page and its word library the first time. Words are picked in your browser, and nothing you generate is sent anywhere.
