What Is a 9:16 Aspect Ratio?
9:16 means nine units wide for every sixteen units tall. It’s the widescreen 16:9 shape turned upright, and it matches the shape of most phone screens held vertically, so a 9:16 image can fill the display without bars.
It helps to separate the ratio from the resolution. The ratio is the shape; the resolution is how many pixels the image contains. 720 × 1280 and 1080 × 1920 are both 9:16, but the second has more than twice as many pixels and looks sharper on a high-resolution screen.
When to Use a 9:16 Vertical Image
Use 9:16 when the image will be viewed full-screen on a phone, for example:
- Stories and other full-screen vertical posts;
- covers and stills for Reels and other short-form vertical video;
- phone wallpapers and lock screens;
- tall digital signage and vertical banner spaces.
Platforms update their specifications from time to time, so check each one’s current guidance if you need an exact size. For an upright frame that isn’t quite so tall, try 3:4.
How to Crop an Image to 9:16
- Choose an image or drag it onto the upload area. JPG, PNG and WebP work in every modern browser.
- The 9:16 frame appears over your photo, already locked to the ratio. Drag it to move it, or drag a corner to make it bigger or smaller. You can also use the zoom slider.
- Rotate the photo if it’s sideways, and turn on the grid if you want help with composition.
- Check the output size. It starts at the full size of your crop; type a width or height to make the download smaller, and the other side updates to keep exactly 9:16.
- Pick JPG, PNG or WebP, then select Download.
Tip: content near the top and bottom of a full-screen vertical image is often covered by profile names, captions or buttons. Keep faces and text toward the middle of the frame.
Cropping vs resizing
Cropping cuts away the area outside the frame and changes the shape to 9:16. Changing the output size then resizes what’s left, scaling it up or down evenly, so nothing is ever stretched. To change only the pixel size of an image without cropping it, use an image resizer; to shrink the file afterwards, an image compressor can help.
Best Pixel Dimensions for 9:16 Images
All of these sizes are exactly 9:16. 1080 × 1920 is a widely used target for phone screens.
| Size (px) | Typical use |
|---|---|
| 720 × 1280 | Lightweight vertical images |
| 1080 × 1920 | Full HD vertical; common for phone-screen content |
| 1440 × 2560 | High-resolution phone screens |
| 2160 × 3840 | 4K vertical; only if your crop is large enough |
If your crop is smaller than the size you choose, the tool tells you the image will be enlarged. Pick a smaller size, or zoom out to keep more of the original.
How to Keep Your Subject in Frame
- Find the vertical line of the photo. A standing person, a tree or a tall building works naturally; a group in a row does not.
- Turn on the thirds grid and place eyes or the main detail near the upper third line.
- Leave space in the direction the subject faces so the picture doesn’t feel cramped.
Cropping Landscape Photos Into Portrait Images
Turning a wide photo into a tall one removes most of it. Cropping a 16:9 landscape to 9:16 keeps only about a third of its width, and a typical 4:3 landscape keeps about 42%. Everything outside that narrow strip is discarded.
That can still work well when the subject is compact: one person, a product or a doorway. If the photo depends on its width, such as a panorama or a group shot, consider a square crop or keep it in 16:9 instead.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is 9:16 the same as 1080 × 1920?
1080 × 1920 is one size that has a 9:16 ratio, but it isn’t the only one. 720 × 1280 and 1440 × 2560 are also 9:16. The ratio is the shape; the pixel size is the resolution.
What is the difference between 9:16 and 16:9?
They’re the same proportions rotated. 9:16 is tall (portrait), suited to phones held upright. 16:9 is wide (landscape), suited to TVs, monitors and most video players.
Why does my photo look blurry after cropping to 9:16?
A narrow crop from a wide photo can contain few pixels. If you then save it at 1080 × 1920, the tool has to enlarge it. Check the Crop size shown under the preview and choose an output size no larger than that for the sharpest result.
Are my photos uploaded anywhere?
No. The image is opened and cropped inside your browser, and the download is created on your device. The file isn’t sent to a server for processing.
