What Does a 3:4 Aspect Ratio Mean?

A 3:4 aspect ratio is three units wide for every four units tall, so the height is one third larger than the width. It’s a portrait shape: taller than it is wide, but far less tall than a full-screen 9:16 image.

Many phone cameras capture 4:3 photos, so when you hold the phone upright the result is usually 3:4. That makes 3:4 a natural crop for vertical phone pictures: you can tidy the edges without changing the shape people are used to seeing.

Where Does a 3:4 Portrait Crop Work Well?

  • Head-and-shoulders portraits and profile photos that need a little more height than a square.
  • Vertical image slots in websites, catalogues and lookbooks.
  • Posters, flyers and print layouts designed around a 3:4 page area, such as 6 × 8 or 9 × 12 inches.
  • Product photos of tall items, such as bottles, clothing and furniture.

How to Crop an Image to 3:4

  1. Choose an image or drag it onto the upload area. JPG, PNG and WebP work in every modern browser.
  2. The 3:4 frame appears over your photo, already locked to the ratio. Drag it to move it, or drag a corner to make it bigger or smaller. You can also use the zoom slider.
  3. Rotate the photo if it’s sideways, and turn on the grid if you want help with composition.
  4. Check the output size. It starts at the full size of your crop; type a width or height to make the download smaller, and the other side updates to keep exactly 3:4.
  5. Pick JPG, PNG or WebP, then select Download.

Tip: if you start with a landscape photo, try rotating it first. A sideways phone picture rotated upright may already be close to 3:4 and need only a light crop.

Cropping vs resizing

Cropping cuts away the area outside the frame and changes the shape to 3:4. Changing the output size then resizes what’s left, scaling it up or down evenly, so nothing is ever stretched. To change only the pixel size of an image without cropping it, use an image resizer; to shrink the file afterwards, an image compressor can help.

Common 3:4 Image Dimensions

Each size below is exactly 3:4: the height is the width multiplied by 4/3.

3:4 vs 4:3: What Is the Difference?

The two ratios contain exactly the same proportions turned through 90 degrees. The first number is always the width:

  • 3:4 is portrait: 3 wide, 4 tall (for example 900 × 1200).
  • 4:3 is landscape: 4 wide, 3 tall (for example 1200 × 900).

If a layout asks for 3:4 and you crop to 4:3 by mistake, the image will be sideways to the space it’s meant to fill. For wide photos, use the 4:3 cropper instead.

Portrait Cropping Tips

  • Place the eyes about a third of the way down the frame; the thirds grid makes this easy.
  • Avoid cropping exactly at a joint such as a wrist, elbow or knee. Cropping between joints usually looks more natural.
  • Leave a little headroom, but not so much that the subject looks small in the frame.
  • Need it taller still? 9:16 fills a phone screen; for equal sides, use the square cropper.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I work out 3:4 dimensions?

Multiply the width by 4/3 to get the height, or multiply the height by 0.75 to get the width. A 900-pixel-wide 3:4 image is 1200 pixels tall. For an exact ratio, use a width that divides evenly by 3.

Is 3:4 portrait or landscape?

3:4 is portrait, because the height (4) is greater than the width (3). Its landscape counterpart is 4:3.

Can I print a 3:4 image?

Yes, on paper with the same proportions, such as 6 × 8 or 9 × 12 inches. On a different print shape, like 4 × 6 inches, the lab will crop or add borders. Print sharpness also depends on how many pixels you have for the print size.

Does the tool keep the original file?

Yes. Your original image is never changed. The crop is saved as a new file when you select Download.
