Free Picture Stencil Maker
Turn a photo or picture into a printable stencil online for free. Adjust the threshold, detail, edges, and cut-friendly settings, then download your stencil.
Free Picture Stencil Maker Online
This free picture stencil maker turns photos, illustrations, logos and other pictures into stencil designs you can print, cut and paint with. Upload a picture, choose a style, adjust it until the important shapes read clearly, then download a PNG or a vector SVG, or print it at the exact size you need.
Unlike a simple black-and-white filter, this picture stencil maker also checks whether your stencil will hold together. It finds pieces that would fall out when cut, adds bridges to keep them attached, and lets you fix the last details by hand. It works as a free online stencil maker in any modern browser, and your picture never leaves your device.
How to Turn a Picture Into a Stencil
1. Upload Your Picture
Drop a JPG, PNG or WebP picture onto the page, or try one of the samples. If you only need part of the picture, use Crop under Advanced Controls, or crop your image to an exact aspect ratio first.
2. Choose a Stencil Style
Pick a conversion mode: Classic for a straightforward black-and-white stencil, High Contrast for flat photos, Adaptive for uneven lighting, Outline for line art, Posterized for tonal bands, Silhouette for one solid shape, or Cut-Friendly for bold, simple shapes. Presets such as Portrait, Logo and Spray Paint choose sensible settings for you.
3. Adjust the Details
Threshold decides which tones become black. Detail controls how much fine texture survives, Smoothing rounds off jagged edges and speckle, and in Outline mode Edge strength and Line thickness control the lines. The before/after slider shows the effect immediately.
4. Check the Stencil for Isolated Areas
The Stencil Check counts cut areas, loose pieces, tiny details and very thin lines. The Bridge Assistant connects loose pieces automatically and highlights the bridges in red so you can see them. Use Touch Up to adjust any bridge or detail by hand.
5. Download or Print Your Stencil
Download a PNG for printing or sharing, or an SVG for cutting machines and resizing. To print, choose the paper, orientation, margins and size, then press Print stencil.
What Is a Stencil?
A stencil is a sheet with shapes cut out of it. Paint or ink passes through the openings and is blocked everywhere else, so the design can be repeated on walls, fabric, wood or paper. A silhouette is a single solid shape, an outline is just the edges, and a normal black-and-white picture is simply two tones. A physical stencil has an extra requirement: the material between the cut areas must stay connected, or important pieces, such as the middle of a letter, fall out.
How Does a Picture Stencil Maker Work?
- Image conversion: the picture is cropped, rotated or mirrored if you choose, and resized for fast editing.
- Grayscale: colours become brightness values, so only light and dark matter.
- Thresholding: every tone darker than the threshold becomes black; adaptive mode compares each area with its surroundings.
- Edge detection: outline mode looks for sudden changes in brightness, which are the edges of shapes.
- Cleanup: smoothing and speck removal clear away noise that would be hard to cut.
- Connected-component analysis: the stencil is divided into separate regions to find pieces that aren’t attached to the sheet.
- Bridge assistance: each loose piece is connected to the nearest part of the sheet with a short bridge.
- Export: the result is saved as a PNG image, traced into vector SVG outlines, or laid out for printing.
It’s all done with predictable image-processing steps in your browser, not AI, so the same settings always give the same stencil.
Best Pictures for Making Stencils
Photos With Clear Subjects
One main subject that fills most of the frame gives the clearest stencil. Crop away anything that doesn’t matter.
High-Contrast Pictures
Strong light and shadow survive the conversion to two tones. Flat, evenly lit photos tend to lose their shapes.
Simple Backgrounds
A plain wall or sky can be removed with background cleanup. Busy backgrounds add clutter that has to be cleaned up afterwards.
Logos and Illustrations
Graphics with solid shapes and clean edges convert almost perfectly. They often contain letters that need bridges, which the Bridge Assistant handles.
Portraits and Faces
Faces work well with side lighting and a plain background. Expect to spend a minute in Touch Up making sure the eyes and mouth read clearly; very busy photographs need more cleanup.
How to Make a Good Stencil From a Photo
- Crop tightly around the subject.
- Boost contrast with High Contrast mode if the photo looks flat.
- Set the threshold so the key shapes, such as eyes, letters or edges, are clearly defined.
- Remove background noise with background cleanup and speck removal.
- Smooth the edges so they are easier to cut.
- Preserve important details by lowering smoothing locally with Touch Up rather than globally.
- Add bridges and check for small islands before printing.
Picture Stencil Styles
Black and White Stencil
Classic mode gives a bold two-tone design, the most common choice for painting and printing.
Outline Stencil
Outline mode keeps only the edges, which is ideal for tracing onto wood, fabric or a wall before painting by hand.
Silhouette Stencil
Silhouette mode turns the subject into one solid shape: great for animals, people and objects against a plain background.
High-Contrast Stencil
High Contrast mode stretches the tones first, rescuing detail from dull or hazy photos.
Detailed Stencil
Adaptive mode with high detail keeps the most texture, for screen-printing designs or careful hand cutting.
Cut-Friendly Stencil
Cut-Friendly mode simplifies the design into larger connected shapes with tiny details removed, the easiest style to cut and paint.
What Are Stencil Bridges?
When a cut area completely surrounds a piece of material, that piece becomes an island. The middle of an O, the triangle inside an A, the two holes in a B, and the centre of an eye are all common islands. Cut the stencil and they fall out, so your O turns into a solid circle when painted.
A bridge is a narrow strip of material left in place to hold the island to the rest of the sheet. The Bridge Assistant finds every island and adds the shortest practical bridge, or two for extra strength. It’s an aid, not a guarantee: always look at where the bridges land, and move or add them with Touch Up if a different spot looks better.
How to Make a Stencil Easier to Cut
- Remove tiny details with the speck remover. They’re fiddly to cut and rarely visible when painted.
- Increase connections with wider bridges or two bridges per piece.
- Avoid extremely thin lines; increase line thickness or smoothing.
- Make the stencil big enough: details that are 2 mm on paper are hard to cut cleanly.
- Inspect enclosed regions in the Stencil Check before you cut.
- Simplify complex photos with a lower Detail setting or Cut-Friendly mode.
- Test print on plain paper before cutting card, acetate or vinyl.
Printable Stencil Maker
As a printable stencil maker, the tool lays your design out on A4, Letter or A3 paper in portrait or landscape, with small, normal or large margins. Choose Fit to page for the biggest stencil that fits one sheet, or set an exact width in millimetres, centimetres or inches. Larger designs, such as a 60 cm wall stencil, are split across several pages with overlaps, page numbers and alignment marks, so you can print a stencil from a photo on an ordinary home printer and tape the pages together.
Picture Stencil Maker for Crafts
Stencils turn up in almost every craft: paper crafts and card making, cardboard signs, painted furniture, wall art, woodburning and woodworking patterns, fabric and T-shirt painting (use Mirror for transfers), cake decorating guides and all kinds of DIY projects. For craft use, the Craft preset gives clean shapes with moderate detail.
Picture Stencil Maker for Spray Painting
Spray paint drifts under thin edges and fills tiny gaps, so bold shapes work best. Use the Spray Paint preset or simplify the details, make sure every enclosed piece has a bridge, and remove tiny islands. Print and cut the stencil, hold it flat against the surface (a light repositionable adhesive helps), and apply several light coats rather than one heavy one. Always follow the safety instructions on your paint, and work somewhere well ventilated.
Photo to Stencil vs Silhouette
A silhouette is a single filled shape, perfect when you want the outline of a subject. A photo-to-stencil conversion keeps internal detail as well (eyes, folds, lettering), and has to account for which areas are cut and which stay connected. Choose Silhouette mode for the first, and Classic, Adaptive or Cut-Friendly with bridges for the second.
PNG vs SVG for Stencils
PNG
A PNG is a grid of pixels. It’s ideal for printing, quick sharing and simple craft projects. Choose high resolution for larger prints, and a transparent background if you’ll place the stencil over something else.
SVG
An SVG made here contains real vector outlines traced from the stencil, with holes preserved, so it can be resized to any size without becoming pixelated. That makes it the better choice for cutting machines, vinyl cutting, laser-cutting software and other vector workflows. When you set a custom size, the SVG carries that physical size too.
Free Picture Stencil Maker vs Manual Stencil Design
Automatic conversion is fast, gives a strong starting point and handles photographs that would take hours to trace. Manual design gives complete control, which matters for highly detailed artwork. This tool combines both: generate the stencil automatically, then use Touch Up to repaint, erase and bridge exactly where it matters.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I turn a photo into a stencil for free?
Yes. Uploading, converting, editing, printing and downloading PNG and SVG stencils are all free, with no account and no watermark.
What is the best picture for making a stencil?
A clear subject with strong contrast against a simple background. Logos, silhouettes and well-lit portraits convert best; busy photos need more cleanup.
How do I make a stencil from a picture?
Upload the picture, choose a conversion mode or preset, adjust the threshold and detail, check the Stencil Check for loose pieces, then download or print it.
Can I make a stencil from a JPG?
Yes. JPG, PNG and WebP pictures are supported.
Can I make a stencil from a PNG?
Yes. Transparent areas of a PNG are treated as background.
Can I turn a portrait into a stencil?
Yes. Start with the Portrait or Face preset, use background cleanup if the background is plain, and use Touch Up to keep the eyes and mouth readable.
Can I make a stencil from a logo?
Yes. The Logo preset keeps sharp edges, and the Bridge Assistant connects the middles of letters such as O, A and B.
What is the difference between a stencil and a silhouette?
A silhouette is one solid shape. A stencil also has to stay in one piece when it is cut, so enclosed areas need bridges to the rest of the sheet.
What are stencil bridges?
Thin strips of stencil material that cross a cut area to hold an enclosed piece, like the middle of an O, in place.
Why do stencil pieces need bridges?
Without them, any piece completely surrounded by a cut area falls out when you cut the stencil, and the shape is lost when you paint.
Can I print the stencil at home?
Yes. Choose A4, Letter or A3, the orientation, margins and size, then press Print stencil for a print-ready page at the exact size.
Can I make a stencil larger than one sheet of paper?
Yes. Set a custom size larger than the page and the stencil prints across several pages, with 10 mm overlaps, page numbers and alignment marks so you can tape them together.
Can I download my stencil as PNG?
Yes, at standard or high resolution, with a white, transparent or custom background.
Can I download an SVG stencil?
Yes. The SVG contains genuine vector outlines traced from your stencil, not an embedded image, so it scales without becoming pixelated.
Is the picture stencil maker free?
Yes, every feature on this page is free to use.
Does the tool upload my picture?
No. Your picture is processed in your browser and isn’t uploaded to our server.
Can I edit the stencil manually?
Yes. Touch Up has a brush, an eraser and a bridge tool, with undo and redo. Your edits are kept when you change other settings and are included in every download.
Can I make a stencil for spray painting?
Yes. The Spray Paint preset favours bold, connected shapes with tiny specks removed, which suits spray paint well.
Can I use a stencil for woodworking?
Yes. Print the stencil to trace or transfer the design onto wood, or use it as a painting stencil on a sign or panel.
Can I use this stencil with a Cricut?
You can import the SVG download into cutting software that accepts SVG files, such as Cricut Design Space. Check the preview there before cutting, as compatibility depends on the software.
