Free JSON to Excel Converter Online
This free JSON to Excel converter online turns JSON data into an Excel spreadsheet you can sort, filter and share. JSON is built for moving structured data between programs; Excel is built for reading and analysing it. The converter bridges the two: it turns JSON objects into spreadsheet rows, keys into columns, and nested data into something you can actually filter and chart.
It’s more than a one-click JSON to XLSX converter. You can see the structure of your JSON, pick exactly which records to convert, decide how nested objects and arrays are handled, rename and reorder columns, preview the result, and then download a genuine Excel workbook. Think of it as a small JSON spreadsheet converter that keeps you in control.
JSON to Excel Example: Before and After
Here’s a typical API response, and the Excel sheet the converter makes from it with the default settings.
{
"data": {
"customers": [
{ "id": 1, "name": "Ayesha Khan", "active": true,
"address": { "city": "Karachi" }, "tags": ["vip", "newsletter"] },
{ "id": 2, "name": "Sara Ahmed", "active": false,
"address": { "city": "Lahore" }, "tags": [] }
]
}
}| id | name | active | address.city | tags |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Ayesha Khan | TRUE | Karachi | vip, newsletter |
| 2 | Sara Ahmed | FALSE | Lahore |
The converter found the data.customers array on its own, made one row per customer, kept id as a number and active as a true/false value, flattened the address into a column, and joined the tags into one cell.
How to Convert JSON to Excel Online
Paste or Upload Your JSON
Paste JSON into the editor, or upload a .json file. JSON Lines files (.jsonl or .ndjson) work too. The JSON is checked as you go; if something is wrong, you’ll see where, for example “Invalid JSON near line 18, column 12”.
Choose the Data to Convert
The converter looks for arrays of records anywhere in your JSON and lists them with their record counts, such as data.users — 250 records. Tick the one you want, or several to create one sheet each. The structure explorer lets you pick any other array or object, and you can convert just a range of records.
Configure Nested JSON
Choose whether nested objects become separate columns (flattened) or stay as JSON text, and how arrays should be handled: joined into one cell, kept as JSON, expanded into numbered columns, or moved to their own sheet.
Preview the Excel Data
The preview shows the sheet exactly as it will be exported, with row numbers, column letters, and each column’s data type. Search the rows to check that values landed in the right place.
Download the Excel File
Press Download Excel for a real .xlsx workbook with your sheet names, formatted header row, filters and frozen header. A CSV download and a copy-to-clipboard option are also available.
What Is JSON?
JSON (JavaScript Object Notation) is a text format for structured data. An object is a set of key-value pairs in curly braces, like {"name": "Ayesha", "age": 31}. An array is an ordered list in square brackets. Values can be strings, numbers, booleans (true/false), null, or further objects and arrays, which is what makes JSON nested. Almost every web API speaks JSON.
What Is an Excel XLSX File?
XLSX is the modern Excel workbook format. A workbook contains one or more worksheets; each worksheet is a grid of rows and columns, and each cell holds a value with a type: number, text, date or true/false. XLSX files open in Microsoft Excel, Google Sheets, LibreOffice Calc, Apple Numbers and most other spreadsheet programs.
Why Convert JSON to Excel?
Spreadsheets make data easy to sort, filter, total and share with people who don’t read JSON. Common reasons include analysing API data, building reports, working with customer exports and product catalogs, reviewing logs, handling ecommerce orders, checking financial records, exploring research datasets, cleaning data before an import, and sharing structured data with colleagues.
How JSON Data Maps to Excel Rows and Columns
JSON Objects Become Rows
In an array of objects, each object is one record, so each becomes one row of the sheet.
JSON Keys Become Columns
Every distinct key becomes a column header, in the order the keys first appear (or alphabetically, if you prefer).
Missing Fields Become Empty Cells
Records don’t need identical keys. If one record has email and another doesn’t, the second simply gets an empty cell, and values never shift into the wrong column.
Nested Objects Become Multiple Columns
When flattening is on, an object inside a record is spread across several columns named by its path, as shown below.
How to Convert Nested JSON to Excel
Nested JSON is flattened by joining the keys along the path to each value. This record:
{
"name": "Ayesha",
"address": {
"city": "Karachi",
"country": "Pakistan"
}
}becomes this row:
| name | address.city | address.country |
|---|---|---|
| Ayesha | Karachi | Pakistan |
You can use a dot, an underscore or your own separator, and switch to friendly names such as “Address City”. If you’d rather keep the structure, choose Keep as JSON and the whole object stays in one cell.
How to Convert a JSON Array to Excel
The most common shape is an array of objects: [{…}, {…}, {…}]. The converter selects it automatically, and each object becomes a spreadsheet row. An array of plain values (like a list of names) becomes a single “value” column. A single object on its own is converted as one row.
Arrays Inside JSON: Four Ways to Convert Them
Arrays inside records, like the items in an order, are where most converters fall short, because there’s no single right way to put a list into one row. This converter lets you choose. Take this order:
[{ "orderId": "A-1001", "items": [ { "sku": "KB-01", "qty": 1 }, { "sku": "MS-02", "qty": 2 } ] }]Keep as JSON
One row; the whole list stays readable in one cell.
| orderId | items |
|---|---|
| A-1001 | [{"sku":"KB-01","qty":1},{"sku":"MS-02","qty":2}] |
Expand Array Indexes
One row, with numbered columns for each item. Best for short lists of the same length.
| orderId | items.0.sku | items.0.qty | items.1.sku | items.1.qty |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| A-1001 | KB-01 | 1 | MS-02 | 2 |
Create a Separate Sheet
The orders sheet keeps one row per order, and a second sheet lists every item with a parent_row column pointing back to its order. Best for long or uneven lists, and for pivot tables.
| parent_row | sku | qty |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | KB-01 | 1 |
| 1 | MS-02 | 2 |
Join Values
Lists of plain values, such as ["vip", "newsletter"], become vip, newsletter in one cell. Lists of objects fall back to JSON text, so nothing is lost.
What Gets Converted: JSON to Excel Reference
| JSON value | Excel result |
|---|---|
| "Karachi" | Text |
| 42 or 49.90 | Number (sums and sorting work) |
| true / false | TRUE / FALSE (Excel booleans) |
| null or a missing key | Empty cell |
| "00123" | Text, so the leading zeros stay |
| 12345678901234567890 | Exact text (too long for an Excel number) |
| "2026-10-06T12:30:00Z" | Text, or a real Excel date if you choose |
| { "city": "Karachi" } | Column address.city (or JSON text) |
| ["red", "large"] | "red, large", JSON text, numbered columns or a separate sheet |
| "=SUM(A1:A9)" | Plain text, never run as a formula |
Why Use This JSON to Excel Converter Online?
- It finds your data. Record arrays are detected anywhere in the JSON and listed with their counts, so API wrappers are no problem.
- You decide how nested data looks. Flatten or keep objects, and choose one of four array strategies.
- Several sheets in one workbook. Convert users and orders together, or move nested lists to their own sheets.
- Column control. Include, exclude, rename, reorder and set the type of every column before you download.
- No silent data damage. Large IDs, leading zeros, empty values and data types are handled deliberately.
- Room for real files. JSON and JSON Lines files up to 50 MB, processed in a background thread so the page stays responsive.
- Private. Conversion happens in your browser; there’s no upload and no account.
Tips for a Clean JSON to Excel Conversion
- Give records the same keys where you can; missing keys simply become empty cells.
- Keep each field’s type consistent, such as always a number or always text, so Excel can sort and total it.
- Choose “Create separate sheet” for long lists inside records instead of expanding them into dozens of columns.
- Set ID, ZIP code and phone columns to Text if they should never be treated as numbers.
- Check the preview and the conversion summary before downloading, and use search to spot-check values.
- For very large exports, convert a record range at a time.
How to Convert an API Response JSON to Excel
APIs usually wrap their records: {"data": [ … ]}, {"results": [ … ]}, or something deeper like data.users. The converter detects record arrays by their structure, not their name, so it finds them wherever they are and lists them for you to choose. Paging details and status fields in the wrapper are left out unless you select them.
JSON to Excel Without Losing Data
Careless conversion can quietly damage data. Here’s how each risk is handled:
- Nested objects and arrays: flattened, joined, expanded or kept as JSON, as you choose, so nothing is dropped.
- null: becomes an empty cell rather than the word “null”.
- Numbers and booleans: stay real numbers and TRUE/FALSE, so totals and filters work.
- Large IDs: Excel stores numbers with about 15 significant digits, so an ID like 12345678901234567890 would be rounded. Such values are kept exactly, as text.
- Leading zeros: strings like “00123” (ZIP codes, SKUs, phone numbers) stay text, so their zeros survive.
- Missing fields: left empty without shifting other values.
Turning everything into text would break sums and sorting; turning everything that looks numeric into numbers would destroy IDs and codes. The converter keeps JSON’s own types, and you can override any column to Text, Number, Date or Boolean.
JSON to Excel vs JSON to CSV
JSON to Excel
An Excel workbook can hold multiple sheets, formatting, filters, a frozen header and real data types such as numbers, dates and booleans.
JSON to CSV
CSV is simple and lightweight: one flat table of text that nearly any program can read. It has no sheets, formatting or types. Use CSV for importing into other systems, and Excel when people will read and work with the data. This tool can produce both.
Can JSON Be Opened Directly in Excel?
Some versions of Excel can import JSON through their data-import tools, but that usually means working through query steps, especially for nested data. Converting the JSON into a ready-made XLSX workbook gives you clean rows and columns straight away, and the same file works in Excel, Google Sheets and LibreOffice.
JSON to Excel for API Data
Export a REST API response to review it in a spreadsheet: orders from an ecommerce API, events from an analytics API, contacts from a CRM export, items from a product API, or readings from a weather dataset. Multi-sheet export keeps related collections, such as users and orders, together in one file.
JSON to Excel for Developers
A spreadsheet view is a quick way to debug API responses, inspect a dataset for missing or unexpected values, share API results with non-developers, create one-off reports, validate data transformations, and explore unfamiliar data. The structure explorer and type indicators show at a glance what a response really contains.
JSON to Excel for Business Data
Many business systems export JSON: sales, inventory, customers, orders and products. Converting to Excel lets you build reports, pivot tables and charts with tools your team already knows.
Common JSON to Excel Problems
Nested Objects
Flatten them into path-named columns, or keep each as JSON in one cell.
Arrays Inside Objects
Join simple lists into one cell, expand them into numbered columns, keep them as JSON, or move arrays of objects to their own sheet. Arrays with more than 50 items are kept as JSON rather than creating hundreds of columns.
Missing Fields
Columns are the union of all keys, and missing values are left empty.
Large Numbers
Integers beyond Excel’s precision are preserved digit for digit as text.
Leading Zeros
Text values stay text, so “00123” is never turned into 123. You can also force any column to Text.
Invalid JSON
Errors show the line and column, and Show me jumps to the problem in the editor. Common causes are trailing commas and single quotes.
Very Large JSON Files
Files up to 50 MB are processed in a background worker, and the preview shows at most 200 rows. Excel itself allows 1,048,576 rows and 16,384 columns per sheet. For bigger files, convert a record range at a time; to simply read a huge JSON file, the large file viewer opens text files up to 2 GB page by page.
Is JSON to Excel Conversion Safe?
When conversion runs entirely in the browser, the JSON does not need to be uploaded to a conversion server, and that’s how this tool works: parsing, flattening and building the workbook all happen on your device. Text values are written to the workbook as text, never as formulas, and the CSV and copy options add a protective apostrophe to values that start with =, +, − or @ so they can’t run as formulas when opened.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I use this JSON to Excel converter online?
Paste your JSON or upload a .json file, choose the array of records to convert, decide how nested objects and arrays should be handled, check the preview, then press Download Excel.
Is there a free JSON to Excel converter online?
Yes, this one. It’s free, needs no sign-up, adds no watermark and has no daily limit. It runs in your browser, so there’s nothing to install.
Can I convert JSON to XLSX?
Yes. The download is a genuine .xlsx workbook, the modern Excel format, not a renamed CSV file.
Is this JSON to Excel converter free?
Yes. There’s no account, no watermark and no limit on the number of conversions.
Can I convert JSON to Excel without installing software?
Yes. Everything runs in your web browser, so you don’t need Excel, a plugin or any other software to create the file.
Can I convert a JSON file to Excel?
Yes. Upload or drag in a .json file (or .jsonl / .ndjson for JSON Lines) up to 50 MB. The Excel file is named after your JSON file.
Can I paste JSON directly into the converter?
Yes. Paste it into the editor; it’s checked as you type, and Format JSON tidies it up.
Can I convert nested JSON to Excel?
Yes. Nested objects can be flattened into columns such as address.city, or kept as JSON text in one cell. Arrays can be joined, kept as JSON, expanded into numbered columns, or moved to their own sheet.
How are JSON arrays converted to Excel rows?
In an array of objects, each object becomes one row and each key becomes a column. Objects with missing keys simply leave those cells empty.
Can I choose which JSON fields become Excel columns?
Yes. The column mapping table lets you include or exclude each field.
Can I rename Excel columns?
Yes. Type a new name for any column, or switch between the original JSON keys and friendly names such as “Address City”. You can also reorder columns.
Can I create multiple Excel sheets from JSON?
Yes. Tick several record collections to give each its own sheet, or move arrays of objects into separate sheets linked by a parent_row column. Sheets can be renamed.
Can I convert an API response to Excel?
Yes. The converter finds the arrays of records inside the response, such as data, results or items (or any other name), so you can convert the records rather than the wrapper.
Does the converter preserve numbers and booleans?
Yes. Numbers become real Excel numbers and true/false become Excel booleans. Very large integers that Excel can’t store exactly are kept as text so no digits are lost.
What happens to null values?
null becomes an empty cell. Missing fields are also left empty.
Can I convert large JSON files?
Files up to 50 MB are accepted, and the preview shows at most 200 rows to stay fast. How large a file works in practice depends on your device’s memory; very large files are best split up or converted in ranges.
Does JSON to Excel conversion upload my data?
No. The conversion runs in your browser, so your JSON isn’t uploaded to a conversion server.
What is the maximum JSON file size?
Files up to 50 MB can be converted. Larger files may exceed what a browser can hold in memory; convert them in record ranges or split them first.
Does the Excel file work in Google Sheets and LibreOffice?
Yes. The download is a standard .xlsx workbook, which opens in Microsoft Excel, Google Sheets (upload it to Google Drive), LibreOffice Calc and Apple Numbers.
Can I convert Excel back to JSON?
Not with this tool. It converts JSON to Excel only.
Can I convert JSONL to Excel?
Yes. JSON Lines files (one JSON object per line) become one row per line. Blank lines are skipped, and any malformed lines are listed by line number.
