Open RAR Files Online
Open, browse and extract RAR archives in your browser, without WinRAR or any other desktop app. Upload a .rar file, look through its folders, pick the files you need, and download them one by one or together as a ZIP.
Open RAR Files Online for Free
This tool opens RAR archives the way a desktop archive manager would. After you upload a .rar file, you see its full folder tree with file sizes, and you decide what to take out of it. You can search inside the archive, select single files or whole folders, and download just those, so there’s no need to unpack a 2,000-file archive to get one document.
It’s handy when you’re on a computer you can’t install software on, a Chromebook, a borrowed laptop, or when you only open a RAR file once in a while and don’t want another app. Need to open a 7Z archive instead? Try our Open 7Z Files Online tool.
How to Open a RAR File Online
Upload Your RAR File
Drag the .rar file onto the upload area or click to choose it. Archives up to 1 GB are accepted; you’ll see the upload progress and speed, and can cancel at any time.
Browse the Files Inside the Archive
Once the archive has been read, the Archive Information panel shows its RAR version, sizes and number of files and folders, and the file browser lists the top-level contents. Click a folder to open it; the path at the top takes you back.
Select the Files You Need
Tick individual files or whole folders, use Select All, or search: type part of a name, an extension like .pdf, a folder like images/, or a pattern like *.jpg, then select every match at once.
Extract and Download Your Files
Press Download beside a file to get just that file, Download Selected as ZIP for your selection, or Extract All for a ZIP of everything. Progress, the current file and elapsed time are shown while it works, and you can cancel.
What Is a RAR File?
RAR is a compressed archive format created by Eugene Roshal and used by WinRAR. Like ZIP, it bundles many files and folders into one file and shrinks them, which makes downloads faster and keeps related files together. RAR is popular for large downloads and backups because it compresses well, can protect contents with a password, and can include recovery data that helps repair minor damage.
There are two main versions in use: RAR4, the older format, and RAR5, introduced with WinRAR 5. Both use the .rar extension, and this tool opens both.
Open a RAR File Without WinRAR
Do You Need WinRAR to Open a RAR File?
No. WinRAR creates RAR archives, but many other programs, and this website, can open them. Unlike ZIP, RAR isn’t built into most operating systems, which is why a double-click often does nothing.
Open RAR Files on Windows
Recent versions of Windows 11 can open some RAR files in File Explorer; older versions need an extraction app. Uploading the file here works on any version, including work computers where you can’t install software.
Open RAR Files on Mac
macOS opens ZIP files natively but not RAR files. Instead of installing an app, upload the archive in Safari, Chrome or Firefox.
Open RAR Files on Linux
Linux distributions usually need an extra package for RAR. If you’d rather not install one, the online tool works in any browser.
Open RAR Files on Chromebook
ChromeOS has limited archive support and can’t run most desktop extractors. Opening RAR files online is often the simplest option on a Chromebook.
Extract RAR Files Online
Opening an archive lets you see what’s inside; extracting copies files out of it. Here the two are separate on purpose: browse first, then extract only what you choose. Extracted files keep their folder structure in ZIP downloads, and Unicode file names, including accents, Asian scripts and emoji, are preserved.
View the Contents of a RAR File Before Extracting
- File list: every file with its size, and an icon for its type.
- Folders: open and close folders, each showing how many files it contains and their total size.
- Search: find files by name, extension or folder path across the whole archive.
- Selective extraction: download one file, a few, or whole folders, without extracting everything.
Very large archives are shown in pages of 200 items, so even an archive with thousands of files stays quick to browse.
Open Password-Protected RAR Files
RAR archives can be protected in two ways, and both work here if you have the password:
- Encrypted contents: file names are visible, but extracting needs the password. You can browse first, then unlock.
- Encrypted file names: the archive shows nothing until you enter the password.
The password is checked against the archive, used only for that job, kept in the server’s memory and never written to logs or disk. This tool can’t open an archive without its password; it doesn’t try to guess or crack passwords.
RAR4 vs RAR5
| RAR4 | RAR5 | |
|---|---|---|
| Introduced | WinRAR 2.9 era | WinRAR 5.0 (2013) |
| Encryption | AES-128 | AES-256 |
| Large dictionaries | Up to 4 MB | Much larger (better on big files) |
| Opens here | Yes | Yes |
In practice, RAR5 compresses large files better and uses stronger encryption, while older tools sometimes can’t read it. Both open here.
Can You Open a Large RAR File Online?
Yes, within sensible limits. The archive is uploaded to our server in pieces, read there, and only the files you choose are extracted. Current limits are an upload of up to 1 GB, up to 4 GB of extracted files at a time, and up to 20,000 files per archive. These protect the server from “archive bombs”, small files that expand to enormous sizes.
If an archive expands beyond the limit you can still browse it and extract the parts you need. Upload speed depends on your connection; extraction is usually quick once the file is on the server.
Why RAR Files Sometimes Fail to Open
Corrupted or Incomplete Archives
An interrupted download produces a file that ends too early. Download it again and compare the file size with the original.
Wrong Password
Passwords are case-sensitive and can contain spaces. If unlocking fails, check for a stray space or a different keyboard layout.
Unsupported Compression or Encryption
Very old or unusual archives can use methods the extractor can’t decode. You’ll see a clear message rather than broken files.
Multi-Volume RAR Archives
Large archives are sometimes split into parts like archive.part1.rar, archive.part2.rar. This tool opens single-file archives only, and tells you when you’ve uploaded one part of a set.
RAR vs ZIP
| RAR | ZIP | |
|---|---|---|
| Compatibility | Needs extra software on most systems | Built into Windows, macOS and most phones |
| Compression | Often smaller, especially RAR5 | Usually a little larger |
| Encryption | AES (RAR5: AES-256), can hide file names | Varies by tool; names usually visible |
| Sharing | Recipient may need an app (or this tool) | Opens almost anywhere |
| Extraction | Supports repair data and solid archives | Simple and fast |
If you receive a RAR file and need to pass it on, Extract All gives you a ZIP that anyone can open.
Common Uses for RAR Archives
- Software downloads and game mods
- Backups of documents and project folders
- Large collections, such as e-books, fonts or audio libraries
- Photo archives from events or shoots
- Project files shared between designers or developers
- Bundling many files into one download
Is It Safe to Open a RAR File Online?
Your uploaded archive is temporarily processed on our server and automatically removed after 30 minutes without use, or straight away when you open another archive. Each archive gets its own isolated folder under a random ID that only your browser knows.
Extracted files are never run or displayed on our site. They’re only offered as downloads. Entries that try to write outside the archive folder (such as ../../ paths) and links are skipped. Opening a RAR file doesn’t make its contents safe: scan downloaded programs with antivirus software before running them, as you would with any download.
Extracted a huge log or text file? The large file viewer opens text files up to 2 GB, and the binary file viewer shows what’s inside unknown files.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I open a RAR file online?
Yes. Upload the .rar file and its folders and files appear in the browser, where you can search them, select what you need and download it. Nothing needs to be installed.
How do I open a RAR file without WinRAR?
Upload it here. The archive is read on our server with the open-source 7-Zip engine, so you can browse and extract it from any browser without WinRAR.
Can I open RAR files on Mac?
Yes. The tool runs in Safari, Chrome or Firefox on macOS, so you don’t need The Unarchiver or any other app to open a RAR file once.
Can I extract RAR files online for free?
Yes. Browsing, extracting, single-file downloads and ZIP downloads are all free, with no account.
Can I open RAR5 files?
Yes. Both RAR4 (older) and RAR5 (current) archives are supported, including solid archives. The archive information panel shows which version you uploaded.
Can I open password-protected RAR files?
Yes, if you know the password. Archives with encrypted file contents and archives that also hide their file names are both supported. Enter the password when asked; it is used only for that archive and is not stored or logged.
Can I download only one file from a RAR archive?
Yes. Press Download next to any file and only that file is extracted and downloaded. You don’t have to extract the whole archive.
Can I extract a large RAR file?
Archives up to 1 GB can be uploaded, and up to 4 GB of files can be extracted at once from archives with up to 20,000 files. For bigger archives, extract the folders you need one at a time.
Can I convert RAR to ZIP?
Yes, in effect. Extract All builds a standard ZIP of the archive’s contents, keeping the folder structure, and Download Selected as ZIP does the same for the files you pick.
What is the difference between RAR and ZIP?
Both bundle and compress files. RAR often compresses better and has features like recovery records, but needs extra software on most systems. ZIP opens almost everywhere without installing anything.
Why won’t my RAR file open?
The usual causes are an incomplete download, a wrong password, or a multi-volume archive (part1.rar, part2.rar…), which this tool can’t open. The error message tells you which one applies.
Can I open a RAR file without installing software?
Yes. Everything happens in your web browser and on our server, so there’s nothing to install.
Are multi-volume RAR archives supported?
No. Only single-file RAR archives can be opened. If your archive is split into parts, join them by extracting part1.rar on a computer with an extraction app.
