Open 7Z Files Online
Look inside 7Z archives and take out what you need, without installing 7-Zip. Upload a .7z file, explore its folders, select files, and download them individually or as a ZIP.
Open 7Z Files Online for Free
If you need to open 7zip files online, this tool gives you a lightweight archive manager in the browser. Upload a .7z archive and you can see every folder and file, with sizes, before deciding what to extract. Pick one file, a handful, or entire folders, and download them on their own or bundled into a ZIP.
It’s useful on Macs and Chromebooks, which can’t open .7z files out of the box, and on any computer where installing 7-Zip isn’t possible. Have a RAR archive instead? Use our Open RAR Files Online tool.
How to Open a 7Z File Online
Upload a 7Z Archive
Drop the .7z file onto the upload area or click to select it. Archives up to 1 GB are accepted, and the upload can be cancelled.
View Files and Folders
The Archive Information panel lists the format version, compression method (for example LZMA2), whether the archive is solid, its compressed and uncompressed size, and how many files and folders it holds. The file browser shows the contents folder by folder.
Select Files to Extract
Tick files or folders, or press Select All. Search across the whole archive by name, extension or folder path, or use a pattern such as *.png, and select every match in one click.
Download Extracted Files
Use Download next to a file for just that file, or Download Selected as ZIP and Extract All for a ZIP with the original folder structure. A progress bar shows how extraction is going.
What Is a 7Z File?
A .7z file is an archive in the 7z format, created by Igor Pavlov for the free, open-source 7-Zip program. It’s designed for high compression: 7z archives are often noticeably smaller than ZIP files of the same data. The format has an open architecture, so it can use several compression methods, and it supports very large files, Unicode file names in any language, folders, and strong AES-256 encryption that can also hide the file names.
Open 7Z Files Without 7-Zip
Open 7Z Files on Windows
Newer Windows 11 updates can open some .7z files in File Explorer; older versions can’t without an extra program. Online, any Windows PC can open them, including locked-down work machines.
Open 7Z Files on Mac
The macOS Archive Utility doesn’t support .7z. Rather than install a third-party app for one archive, upload it here.
Open 7Z Files on Linux
Most distributions offer a 7-Zip package, but it isn’t always installed. The online tool works from any browser without root access.
Open 7Z Files on Chromebook
ChromeOS can’t open .7z archives natively. Opening them online avoids Linux containers and extra apps.
Extract 7Z Files Online
Extraction runs on our server with the official open-source 7-Zip engine, so 7z archives are decoded the same way 7-Zip itself would. Only the files you select are extracted, file names in any language are kept exactly, and folders are preserved inside ZIP downloads.
Browse a 7Z Archive Before Extracting
Highly compressed archives can expand to many times their size, so it’s worth knowing what’s inside first. The browser shows each folder’s file count and total size, lets you search by name or path, and pages through big archives 200 items at a time. You can then extract only the folder or files you need instead of unpacking gigabytes you don’t want.
Open Password-Protected 7Z Files
7-Zip can encrypt an archive’s contents with AES-256, and optionally its file names too (called header encryption). If only the contents are encrypted, you can browse first and enter the password before extracting. If the names are hidden, the archive appears after you unlock it. Passwords are used only for that archive, held in memory, and never logged or stored. The tool doesn’t attempt to recover unknown passwords.
How 7Z Compression Works
LZMA and LZMA2
LZMA looks for repeated sequences of bytes across a very large “dictionary” of recent data, sometimes hundreds of megabytes, and replaces repeats with short references. That large memory is why 7z compresses big files so well. LZMA2, the default in modern 7-Zip, wraps LZMA so that data which doesn’t compress (like JPEGs or videos) is stored efficiently and work can be spread across processor cores. 7z archives can also use other methods such as PPMd, BZip2 or Deflate; the information panel shows which one your archive uses.
Solid Compression
In a solid archive, many files are compressed together as one continuous stream, so similar files help each other compress. The trade-off is that extracting one file may require decoding the files stored before it, so pulling a single file from a large solid archive can take a little longer. It still works the same way here.
Can You Open Large 7Z Files Online?
Yes, within limits designed to keep the service fast and safe. You can upload archives up to 1 GB, extract up to 4 GB of files at a time, and open archives with up to 20,000 files. Because 7z compresses so well, a small archive can expand enormously; the uncompressed size is checked before extraction, and the actual output is watched while it happens. If an archive is too big to extract in full, you can still browse it and extract part of it.
Why Won’t My 7Z File Open?
Corrupted Archive
A truncated or damaged download is the most common cause. Re-download the file and check that its size matches the source.
Incorrect Password
7z passwords are case-sensitive. Check caps lock, keyboard layout and trailing spaces, then try again.
Unsupported Compression Method
Rare or experimental methods and filters may not be readable. You’ll get a clear message instead of corrupted output.
Multi-Volume 7Z Archive
Split archives come as .7z.001, .7z.002 and so on. This tool opens single .7z files only; join the parts on a computer with 7-Zip first.
7Z vs ZIP
| 7Z | ZIP | |
|---|---|---|
| Compression | High (LZMA/LZMA2) | Moderate (usually Deflate) |
| Typical file size | Smaller | Larger |
| Compatibility | Needs 7-Zip or similar on most systems | Opens almost everywhere |
| Encryption | AES-256, can hide file names | Depends on the tool; names visible |
| Best for | Backups, big downloads, saving space | Sharing with anyone |
Need to send a 7Z archive’s contents to someone without 7-Zip? Extract All gives you a ZIP they can open anywhere.
7Z vs RAR
Both formats compress well. 7z is open and free to create with 7-Zip, and usually edges ahead on large files thanks to LZMA2. RAR is created by the commercial WinRAR and offers recovery records that can repair minor damage. Both support AES encryption and hidden file names, and both are opened by SimpleTools24 tools: this page for 7z, and the RAR page for .rar files.
Common Uses for 7Z Files
- Software distributions and portable apps
- Backups of folders and databases
- Source code snapshots
- Large file collections, such as datasets, game assets or document archives
- Installers and driver packs
- Long-term archives where small size matters
Tips When You Open 7zip Files Online
- Check the uncompressed size in the information panel first; a 200 MB 7z archive can hold several gigabytes.
- Search for the file you need instead of extracting everything; it’s faster and saves download time.
- If the archive is solid, extract related files in one go rather than one at a time.
- Keep the password handy before uploading; header-encrypted archives show nothing until they’re unlocked.
- For split archives (.7z.001), join the parts with 7-Zip on a computer first.
Is It Safe to Open a 7Z File Online?
Your uploaded archive is temporarily processed on our server and automatically removed after 30 minutes without use, or as soon as you open another archive. Every archive is handled in its own isolated folder, under a random ID known only to your browser.
Extracted files are only offered as downloads; they’re never run or shown as web pages on our site. Entries with paths that would escape the archive folder, and links, are skipped. Archives can contain harmful programs, so scan executables before running them.
Found a huge text or log file inside? Open it with the large file viewer, or inspect unknown files with the binary file viewer.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I open a 7Z file online?
Upload the .7z file, browse its folders in the file list, tick what you need, and download single files or a ZIP. The whole process happens in your browser window.
Can I open a 7Z file without 7-Zip?
Yes. You don’t need 7-Zip on your computer. The archive is read on our server and you download the files you choose.
Can I open 7Z on Mac?
Yes. macOS can’t open .7z files on its own, but this tool works in Safari, Chrome and Firefox on any Mac.
Can I extract 7Z files online for free?
Yes. Browsing, extracting, downloading single files and downloading ZIPs are free, with no sign-up.
Can I open password-protected 7Z files?
Yes, with the password. 7Z archives that encrypt only the contents and archives that also hide the file names (header encryption) are both supported. The password is used for that archive only and isn’t stored or logged.
Can I open a large 7Z file?
Archives up to 1 GB can be uploaded, with up to 4 GB of extracted files at a time and up to 20,000 files per archive. For highly compressed archives, extract the folders you need separately.
Can I download one file from a 7Z archive?
Yes. Press Download next to any file to extract and download only that file.
What is a 7Z file?
A 7Z file is an archive in the 7z format created by Igor Pavlov for 7-Zip. It stores many files and folders in one file using strong compression, usually LZMA2.
Is 7Z better than ZIP?
7Z usually makes smaller files and supports AES-256 encryption with hidden file names, but ZIP is far more widely supported. Use 7Z to save space and ZIP to share with anyone.
What is LZMA?
LZMA (Lempel–Ziv–Markov chain algorithm) is the compression method behind 7-Zip’s high compression ratios. It finds repeated data across a very large window, which suits big files.
What is LZMA2?
LZMA2 is an improved container for LZMA. It handles data that doesn’t compress well more efficiently and can use several processor cores. It’s the default in modern 7-Zip.
Why won’t my 7Z file open?
Common reasons are an incomplete download, a wrong password, or a split archive (.7z.001, .7z.002…), which this tool doesn’t open. The message shown explains which problem was found.
