How to Open 7Z Files on Windows, Mac, Linux and Phones

By SimpleTools24Published 4 min read

To open a 7Z file, use an extractor that supports the 7z format: 7-Zip on Windows, Keka or The Unarchiver on a Mac, the 7z command on Linux, or an online 7z opener in any browser. Recent Windows 11 builds can also extract .7z files straight from File Explorer. Once you've picked a tool, extracting takes a double-click or a right-click.

Here's the quickest method for each device, plus what to do when a 7z file refuses to open.

Windows

Windows 11 File Explorer

Microsoft added support for extra archive formats, including 7z, to File Explorer in Windows 11. On an up-to-date PC, right-click the .7z file and choose Extract All. If you don't see that option, use 7-Zip.

7-Zip

7-Zip is the reference program for the format. It's free and open source, created by Igor Pavlov, the same developer who designed 7z.

  1. Download 7-Zip from the official site, 7-zip.org, and install it.
  2. Right-click the .7z file.
  3. Choose 7-Zip → Extract to "foldername\" to keep everything in a new folder.

"Extract Here" dumps files into the current folder, which gets messy if the archive has no top-level folder. Download 7-Zip only from its official site: lookalike download sites have bundled unwanted software in the past.

Mac

macOS's Archive Utility handles ZIP but not 7z. Two free apps fill the gap:

  • Keka is a full archiver that can both create and extract 7z.
  • The Unarchiver extracts almost any format and sets itself up as the default opener.

After installing either, double-clicking a .7z file extracts it next to the original. On a managed work Mac where you can't install apps, an online opener in Safari or Chrome is the workaround.

Linux

Most distributions package 7-Zip's command-line tool. Depending on the distribution and its age, it's called 7zip (providing 7z or 7zz) or the older p7zip-full:

bash
# Debian / Ubuntu (recent releases)
sudo apt install 7zip

# extract with full folder paths
7z x archive.7z

# list contents without extracting
7z l archive.7z

Use x rather than e: e extracts every file into a single directory and loses the folder structure.

Chromebook, Android and iPhone

ChromeOS and the phone platforms don't reliably open 7z files on their own. You can install an archive app, but many free ones are full of ads and ask for wide file access. For occasional use, an online opener is often the simpler option: it works the same in Chrome on a Chromebook, Chrome on Android and Safari on iPhone.

How to Extract a 7Z File Online

You can open a 7z file online without installing 7-Zip:

  1. Upload the .7z file (up to 1 GB). Progress and speed are shown as it uploads.
  2. Unlock it if needed. If the archive is encrypted, enter the password. Archives that hide their file names ask for it straight away.
  3. Browse and search. Folders open in a file list with sizes and dates.
  4. Download. Take one file, or tick several and download them as a single ZIP that opens anywhere.

Online extraction means uploading the archive to a server, where it's read with 7-Zip. SimpleTools24 removes uploaded and extracted files automatically after 30 minutes without use. If the archive holds confidential material, extract it locally instead.

Extracting Only the Files You Need

You don't have to unpack a whole archive to get one document out of it. In 7-Zip File Manager, double-click the archive to browse it like a folder, then drag the files you want onto your desktop. Keka and The Unarchiver extract everything by default, but Keka can show the contents first if you open it from the app rather than double-clicking.

This matters more with 7z than with ZIP. Many 7z archives are solid, meaning files are compressed together as one stream, so pulling out a file near the end still requires decompressing the data before it. It works fine; it just takes longer than you might expect on a big archive.

Before a full extraction, also check free disk space. Text-heavy archives can expand to many times their compressed size, and a half-finished extraction on a full disk leaves a confusing mix of complete and missing files.

When a 7Z File Won't Open

If every tool gives an error, the archive itself is probably the problem. The usual suspects:

  • Incomplete download: errors mention "unexpected end of data".
  • Split archive: names like backup.7z.001, backup.7z.002 mean the parts need to be combined first. See how to extract split 7z files.
  • Wrong password: shows as "Wrong password?" or data errors in 7-Zip.
  • Not really a 7z file: "Cannot open file as archive" often means the file is something else.

Each of these is covered step by step in fixing "Cannot open file as archive".

Frequently Asked Questions

Is 7-Zip safe to use?

Yes, when downloaded from 7-zip.org. Keep it updated, because, like all archive tools, it occasionally receives security fixes.

Can WinRAR open 7z files?

Yes. WinRAR extracts 7z archives, though it can't create them.

Do I need to convert 7z to ZIP to open it?

No. Any 7z-capable extractor opens it directly. Convert to ZIP only when you need to send the files to someone who can't open 7z; an online opener can produce the ZIP for you.

Why is the extracted folder so much bigger than the 7z file?

7z compression is very efficient on text-like data, so the expanded files can be many times larger. Make sure you have enough free space before extracting.

Summary

7-Zip on Windows, Keka or The Unarchiver on Mac and the 7z command on Linux handle almost any 7z file. When installing software isn't an option, an online opener gets the files out in a few clicks. For background on the format itself, read what a 7z file is.
